How to care for your jewellery

General guidelines for use and safekeeping

Anpé Atelier Cph recommends that you put on your jewellery in the morning and take it off at night before you go to bed. Precious and semi-precious gemstones risk losing their shine when exposed to oils, lotions, perfume, detergents etc. Therefore apply your perfumes, lotions and hairsprays before you put on your jewellery, and if possible in areas that won’t come in contact with your jewellery.

We recommend that you always make sure to take off your jewellery before sports activities, housework, cooking, dishes, swimming, bathing etc.

In order to avoid scratches, blows to and marks on your jewellery you must wear it with caution. Your jewellery must not be directly exposed to hard and rough objects that may cause damage to the metal or the precious or semiprecious gemstones.

Keep your fine jewellery in a secure location, meaning in a jewellery box, travel clutch or the like. Try to keep your jewellery separate to avoid scratches. Do not put heavy objects on top of jewellery items or next to them as this may cause damage to your jewellery or wring them out of shape. Chains must be closed and put in a flat position, hung or around a soft element to avoid them from tangling.

Precious and semiprecious gemstones

All Anpé Atelier Cph pieces have colorful precious and semi-precious stones.

Precious stones are natural products. Impurities, imperfections and variations to individual stones will occur. This is in no way a fault of the stone, but a beautiful characteristic of a natural product. Two precious gemstones may share colour tone and shape, but they will never be entirely identical. Hence every precious stone is entirely unique.

Precious and semi-precious gemstones are fragile materials and are easily scratched and affected by chemicals. Therefore the jewellery must be worn with caution and care, and, and your precious or semi-precious gemstone jewellery should be gently cleaned using only a soft toothbrush and tepid water. We offer free jewellery cleaning in our showroom in Copenhagen.

Gold

Anpé Atelier Cph uses only 14k and 18k gold. Majority of our jewellery is created in 18k gold as it is more durable therefore better to work with when creating handmade pieces.

Gold is a very soft material – soft enough to be processed and shaped, but also exposed to scraches. A patina of age and use on handcrafted surfaces is natural and a part of the natural beauty. We recommend to have your gold jewellery polished only few times over the life of the piece as the polishing process removes metal.

White Gold

Our white gold jewellery is rhodium plated to achieve a white appearance, as the natural color of white gold tends to be grey. This plating is not permanent and typically needs to be reapplied every 1 – 2 years, depending on wear.

Platinum

As a white metal, platinum is a more premium alternative to white gold. Being significantly denser than white gold, it wears off a lot slower, making it very durable and ideal for jewellery that is worn daily. It will create a patina of age over time but it is a part of the natural beauty. We recommend having your platinum jewellery polished only a few times over the life of the piece as the polishing process removes metal.

The other advantage of platinum is that, unlike white gold, it does not need to be re-plated to keep its nice white colour. Yet, it is important to mention that platinum has a bit more greyish colour compared to rhodium plated white gold.

Can you wash your hands and shower, while wearing your jewellery?

Short answer is; no!

Always take off your jewellery, when you shower and wash your hands. Soap will create a thin layer on top of the jewellery and underneath the gems and will quickly make it look dull and tired. But that is not the only reason why you should avoid showering or washing your hands wearing your jewellery.

The chemicals in the soap can scratch and affect the gemstones – and it will easily scratch the gold.

Instead you can use hand sanitizer on your hands – this is completely harmless to your jewellery, as long as you use the ones containing 60 % alcohol or more.
